The early years foundation stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old. Reception classes follow the early years curriculum.
Within the early years curriculum, there are seven areas of learning. Your child will mostly be taught through games and play.
The early years curriculum is particularly well designed and sequenced. It is precisely tailored to meet children’s needs. Children are well supported to develop strong communication and language skills. This prepares them well for future learning.
The areas of learning are:
- communication and language
- physical development
- personal, social and emotional development
- literacy
- mathematics
- understanding the world
- expressive arts and design

Many children start their Mead Vale journey having joined the Play and Learn Preschool which, although is independently run, is within the school grounds. This helps children make smooth transitions from preschool to school. Please go to Play-and-learn-preschool to find out more.
